National Day known as Qaumee-Dhuvas in Dhivehi is indeed a very important day. The reason why the citizens celebrate this is because of the victory of Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzum over the Portuguese occupation in 1573. According to the Islamic calendar, the National Day of Maldives is celebrated on the first of Rabee-ul-Awwal which is the third month of the Hijri calendar.
Since this day has a historical significance, it's important that every Maldivian celebrates this day. As it is a way of offering respect to him and also to the citizens who fought with him till their last breath. It is also a celebration to rejoice and appreciate our victory.
The citizens celebrate this day in many unique ways. The numerous parades held throughout Maldives, the main one being in the capital city of Malé is one of the many ways. These are predominantly military parades and very ceremonial in nature. They are often accompanied by political speeches and flag-raising ceremonies.
In schools, we celebrate it by wearing traditional clothes, learning more about the National Day, giving speeches about it and also by role-playing the event. Maradhoo School takes great pride in instilling the feeling of patriotism amongst students. Not only were the students and teachers dressed in the traditional Maldivian dress but the little bundles of joy from grade 3 performed a skit as well.
Though the world is becoming a global village and people are becoming global citizens, it is important to remember our roots. It is important we stay in touch with our homeland. Nationalism is a beautiful feeling that we have towards a country which is our very own. I believe that this comes from within the heart and the soul. And this is the essence that helps a nation progress and prosper.
