International Literacy Day 2022

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."

International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8  every year in all countries across the globe. It is celebrated to make people aware of the meaning and importance of literacy for individuals and societies. UNESCO declared 8th September as International Literacy Day to remove worldwide issues of illiteracy. The main purpose was not only to combat illiteracy but also to use it as a tool to empower individuals as well as the whole community.

We can define literacy a
s the ability to read, write, speak and listen in such a way that it helps us to communicate effectively and make sense to the world. And every year literacy day is celebrated with a different theme. The theme for this year is, 'Literacy and Skills Development.'

At one time, a literate person was one who was able to sign a document. Today, the definition includes a variety of functions in different literacy contexts, both print and digital. Changes to society have determined what is deemed important - and so influence what is being taught in our educational institutions.

Everyone has an ambition in their life. Someone wants to become a doctor, someone wants to become an engineer, and others want to be a teacher. And to reach these ambitions we must be able to read and write. Without being able to read and write it becomes difficult to have a remarkable impact on our jobs, our families, and our community.

Maradhoo School celebrated International Literacy Day in a grand fashion. A special assembly was conducted by the students of Grade 8A. The assembly began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, which was followed by a speech from Mohamed Alvin Ishag Solih on the importance and history of this day. Following this, the Principal inaugurated the National Literacy and Mathematics Strategy - Reading Program.

The highlight of the assembly was the inauguration of the book donation program by the Principal. There is no substitute for books in the life of a child. The book donation program was held in our school as part of the International Literacy Day celebrations to drive the passion for reading books among students. This was followed by a speech from the Principal. Another spectacular event during the celebration was the drama by grade  8A students. The ceremony concluded with the national anthem.
