These days, everything we see or hear is about COVID-19. Info-graphics, posters, and media campaigns telling us to stay home, wash our hands, and wear a mask. We are acting as if this is only temporary, when, in reality this may take years to end. We need to learn to live with the virus, as all efforts to combat it have failed.
As we await a vaccine to be developed, health officials warn us that it may take months to fully acquire a safe vaccine that actually works. It is amazing that we have made it this far in such a short period of time, but a vaccine is clearly out of question.
So, how do we live in this pandemic? First, we need to address the social isolation. Since we are being encouraged to stay home, it is difficult to see each other face to face. That’s what the internet is for. Have a video chat with your friends or family or call your relatives. Talk to them and maintain your bond.
Second, we need to promote our mental health and well-being. Our stressful lifestyles are as bad for the mind as they are for the body. Take some time to just breathe and reflect. Or take up a new hobby, like writing, baking or even yoga. And if you ever feel stressed, reach out. Talk to a loved one or contact a psycho-social helpline. Stress is a perfectly normal reaction to how things are going around us. It is not something to be ashamed of.
Not to mention, since schools are being reopened, we should be aware of our situation. Maintaining social distancing, frequently sanitising or washing our hands, taking our temperature and wearing masks are all standard protocols in schools. As students, we must understand our previous habits are unacceptable. We cannot share belongings or mingle and talk together as we used to. It takes time, but eventually we will get used to it.
Life during these times may be hard, but remember, we are all in this together. Make sure to wash your hands and maintain a distance of three feet from others when outside. Stay in touch with loved ones.
