Every year there are two events that are given the most attention. One of them is Children's Day which unfortunately couldn't be celebrated with a lot of grandeur because of the lockdown. But we teachers tried to do the best we could even then, making sure that our best wishes reach our students. However the Teacher's Day was celebrated recently in the new normal and things have changed quite a lot, though there has been a gap of only a few months.
One interesting thing which was evident was the reluctance that many teachers had to celebrate Teacher's Day. Their only reasoning was the fact that we couldn't celebrate Children's Day well. This showed the love that teachers have towards their students.
Having said that we can easily compare the situation that was a few months ago and the present situation. The circumstances are entirely different. When asked, the students said that they would very much want to celebrate Teacher's Day following all the necessary preventive measures. And now this shows the love that the students have towards the teachers.
A one day picnic was planned by the school administration to a nearby uninhabited island. It was a day of merry and rejoice. The whole trip was enthralling. It was fun to explore the island, have a barbeque and just relax. And that seemed like the perfect thing that all of us teachers needed.
There were other tiny tokens of appreciation given to the teachers from the Management and Leading teachers. The teachers also decided to show their gratitude to the Management with a traditional Maldivian feast.
The ending was indeed the best. The PTA had invited the entire school staff for an evening tea party and it was just the icing on the cake. When one of the PTA members was asked, if the entire event planning and preparation cost a lot. Without a hesitation she replied that it was nothing compared to the love and effort the teachers give their students. Honestly, reflecting back on what she said, we can all agree to that.
Although the whole Teacher's Day extravaganza was quite exquisite, it was a bitter-sweet experience without the students. However with the new normal we are learning to live a new life. We are learning new way of appreciating and celebrating life as it comes.
