United Nations Day 2020

On October 24, we celebrate the formation of the United Nations. After the tragedy of World War II, 51 countries committed to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights. This year marks the 75th anniversary of  the United Nations. Since 1948, the UN has helped end conflicts by conducting successful peacekeeping operations in many countries especially in Cambodia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mozambique, Namibia and Tajikistan.

The theme of 2020 was, “Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice."

There are six principal organs of the United Nations. They are the General Assembly which is the deliberative assembly of all UN member states. Then we have the Secretariat which is the administrative organ of the UN. Another important organ of the UN is the International Court of Justice which is the universal court for international law. The most significant part of the UN is considered to be the Security Council which was established for international security reasons. Then we have the UN Economic and Social Council, for global economic and social affairs. And finally we have the Un Trusteeship Council which deals with the administering of trust territories.

United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the enforcement of the UN charter, which is the signed treaty between the nations. There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and impact as the United Nations. Today, the urgency for all countries to come together to fulfil the promise of the nations united, has rarely been greater. The UN has helped us grow and develop in a peaceful and non-violent world, with many widely available resources and having a lot of rights, we are living our lives to the fullest.

At Maradhoo School, students from grade 7B made a short video explaining how anyone can save the world. They told the many ways we can help the world and help preserve unity and prosperity. And let us all stick to the theme of this year. Let us all try to close the little gaps of inequality that we come across. Because only then will we be able to achieve social justice. And that is moving many steps closer to a world that is not filled with sorrows and misery.
