Victory Day 2020

Victory day is celebrated every year on November 3 in the Maldives, to commemorate the day when the Sri Lankan terrorist group attempted to overthrow the Maldivian government.

It was a tough time for everyone. Especially our soldiers, who risked their lives to protect the citizens. On that day in 1988, the terrorists invaded the capital city of Malé and attacked a police station. All the citizens were awoken by the sounds of gunshots in the middle of a peaceful night, too scared to even move. The terrorists and our soldiers were exchanged attacks. Many great people died that day. The terrorists ended up fleeing the scene and were not able to accomplish what they planned. This is why victory day is celebrated every year on this day. It is to honour our brave soldiers who sacrificed themselves and to celebrate our win against the terrorists.

Our school celebrated Victory Day this year through a skit from the grade 5 students. They acted out how our soldiers and the terrorists fought. And how rightfulness and bravery always wins.

It is important to remember that soldiers dedicate their lives in order to let us have a peaceful, safe and happy life. They bravery of the security staff is commendable. They risk their lives to let us have ours.
Another important fact that we learn from this incident is the importance of neighbourhood friendship. Countries should help each other out. They should sort the differences and work towards unity, peace and love. If we take a look at the world now we can easily perceive that all we need is more peace and more love.
