The trust for sustainable living annually conducts a worldwide essay competition to enunciate the importance of sustainability. The competition focuses on a different global sustainability challenge each year and this year's theme is 'Protecting biodiversity'. The topic of the competition was, 'How can we protect biological diversity and stop the sixth mass extinction?'
The competition was divided into two categories, the primary category with a word limit of 400 words and the secondary category with a word limit of 600 words. Once the competition was announced, English teachers made the students of their respective classes aware of the competition, motivated them to take part and explained the criteria of the competition.
A separate online session was held with all the students who were interested in participating in the competition wherein many aspects of the competition were discussed in details. It was an interactive session where students were explained the different ways in which they could approach the theme and the topic. The students were also guided on the type of content for their essays. The concepts of biodiversity and the sixth mass extinction were also interpreted during this session.
One of the highlights of the session was going over the writing process and the format of the essay. This helped the students to follow a specific method in order to write easily and to recall various components of their essay that they might miss otherwise. Moreover, various links were shared in order to further inspire the students. A deadline was then set for the students to send in their essays.
The essays were submitted, and we are very proud to announce that Ahmed Zivan Thalib of grade 7 B has been selected as one of the two students to represent the Maldives at the International Secondary Schools Debate.
We wish him the best for the competition and congratulate him for this remarkable feat!
