World Wildlife Day: Essay Competition

Being in the lockdown in 2021 and attending classes online, there was something that was missing. The excitement, the curiosity, the challenge and the overall fun of being in school. Like an opportunity knocking our door, the Ministry of Education announced a nationwide writing competition for students across Maldives.

The competition was held in significance of the world wildlife day which is celebrated on the third of March every year. The theme of the competition was, 'Forest and Livelihood: Sustaining People and Planet'. The competition was held both in Dhivehi and English.

The competition was held from grade 1 to 12, with the students from grades 1 to 3 in the first category with a word limit of 50 to 100 words, the students from grades4 to 7 in the second category also with a word limit of 50 to 100 words, the students of grades 8 to 10 in the third category with a word limit of 150 to 350 words and the students of grades 11 and 12 in the final category with a word limit of 200 to 500 words.

This was a good opportunity for students to ponder about ecology, the world that we thrive in, the consequences we will face because of our adverse misuse of the planet. The teachers motivated and encouraged the students to participate in the competition as this was a great opportunity to exhibit their writing skills.

The teachers held online sessions for the students to explain them the criteria of the competition and clarify all their queries. The students worked their best and submitted quite fascinating essays. A panel of judges were formed and the final essays were selected.

Fanan Fahmee, a student of grade 8B said, "For this competition I mainly focused on sustaining balance between ecology and economy. I researched a lot and made a list of all the relevant points and connected the dots, to assemble my writing.  I learned a lot about forests and how it helps humanity through this competition."
