On February 21st every year, people all over the world celebrate International Mother Language Day. People celebrate it to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Mother Language also known as mother tongue is the native language that a person speaks. The mother language of the Maldives is Dhivehi.
It is critical to observe Mother Language Day in order to recognize and prevent the loss of our native languages. Many languages have suffered the tragic but all-too-real fate of extinction, but we must not allow our native language to fade into oblivion. Nelson Mandela, the former South African legend, famously stated, "If you communicate to a man in a language he understands, it goes to his head." When you speak to him in his language, it touches his heart."
To celebrate this glorious occasion all the students and teachers of our school came dressed in the traditional Maldivian dress. An assembly was conducted by the Grade 7 students to discuss the importance of this day and to create awareness among the students.
This day was further celebrated by all the students of the school. They made posters regarding the significance of this day and the many different ways in which we can help each other through the power of language. This year the theme of International Mother Language Day was 'Using
technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities.'
The students made posters and displayed them on the school premises. The day was filled with joy, laughter, and vibrant colors.
