February 8th,
also known as International Women’s Day, is a day on which the cultural, economic,
and sociopolitical achievements of women are recognized and commemorated. It
marks the strength of women who, when faced with obstacles, bias, and outright
discrimination, determinedly forge on, prepared to make an impact on the world.
But why do we need to celebrate this?
Unfortunately, gender-related bias, stereotypes, and discrimination are very much alive in this modern age. While the general viewpoint is towards equality, misogyny is still active amongst many, and they’re very comfortable with their views. But the younger generations can change. Their beliefs and views are not set in stone, and hopefully neither is their misogyny, which is why we celebrate Women’s Day. It is to educate everyone.
While the
purpose of Women’s Day is to seek equality, many people tend to forget that
equality does not mean we should bring the other side down as well. Rather, we
should uplift ourselves and educate those with a misinformed view. We’re trying
to make sure everyone’s awesome, not just women.
Let’s not forget about ourselves though. Usually, International Women’s Day is celebrated by honoring amazing women and their achievements. We see these capable women and think of their wonderful tenacity and qualities, but we ignore the awesomeness that is within us and the women around us. Women empowerment is about empowering all women, not a chosen few. We can celebrate all achievements, big or small.

Remember, Women’s Day is about education and appreciation! Appreciate the efforts of women around you, and teach people that misogyny is wrong. Just know that you don’t need to be a woman to celebrate a woman's achievements, you just have to be a person. Happy International Women’s Day!
